98.15% Of Rs 2000 Notes Returned, Only Rs 6,577 Crore Still With Public : RBI

Mumbai : The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on Monday that 98.15% of the Rs.2,000 denomination banknotes have been returned to the banking system, leaving only Rs.6,577 crore worth of such notes still with the public. The RBI had declared the withdrawal of Rs.2,000 banknotes from circulation on May 19, 2023. At the time of the announcement, the total value of these notes in circulation stood at Rs.3.56 lakh crore.

“The total value of Rs.2000 banknotes in circulation, which was Rs.3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of Rs.2000 banknotes was announced, has declined to Rs.6,577 crore at the close of business on January 31, 2025. Thus, 98.15% of the Rs.2000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023, has since been returned. The Rs.2000 banknotes continue to be legal tender” said RBI in a statement.
