In a major setback for Aam Admi Party (AAP), it’s top leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has lost from the New Delhi Assembly seat to BJP’s Parvesh Varma.  His party has also lost to BJP winning only 22 seats, while BJP has won 48 seats. This defeat could be a bad news for the future of the party and its internal unity. However, the loss is a major setback, it does not necessarily mean the end of AAP.

Let’s know how Kejriwal’s defeat could impact AAP

  1. Leadership Crisis

Kejriwal is the face of AAP, and his defeat would create uncertainty about the party’s leadership. After his defeat, the party may need to rethink its leadership strategy and find a strong second-line leader to keep the party united.

  1. Declining Political Influence

AAP has built its identity around governance in Delhi. After Kejriwal’s defeat, it may weaken AAP’s influence, making it difficult to challenge national parties like BJP and Congress in future elections.

  1. Internal Instability

The loss could trigger internal conflicts, with some party members questioning the leadership and decision-making process. Senior leaders may look for alternative strategies or even leave the party.

  1. Setback in Expansion Plans

AAP has been trying to expand its footprint beyond Delhi, especially in Punjab, Gujarat, and Haryana. The loss in Delhi would be a major blow to these efforts, making it harder to gain credibility in other states.

  1. Impact on Party Cadre and Support Base

AAP’s core supporters—who have backed the party for its governance model—may lose faith, leading to a decline in grassroots support. Volunteers and workers could also become demotivated.

  1. BJP’s Stronger Hold on Delhi

After Kejriwal’s defeat, BJP could use the momentum to establish a stronger hold over Delhi, making it harder for AAP to make a comeback in future elections. The central government’s control over Delhi’s administration may further weaken AAP’s position.

  1. Survival Strategy for AAP

To stay relevant, AAP may need to rebuild its leadership team, strengthen grassroots connections, focus on governance and alternative leadership options, Forge new alliances to counter BJP’s dominance

While a loss for Kejriwal would be a major setback, it does not necessarily mean the end of AAP. The party’s ability to reinvent itself and find strong leadership will determine its survival and future success. If AAP can learn from its mistakes and re-strategize, it may still have a role to play in Indian politics.
