Home Minister Shah tables controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill-2019 in Lok Sabha

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has tabled the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in Lok Sabha today.

Speaking on the Bill, Shah said that the Bill is not against the minorities and as many as 1.75 Crore people will benefit from the bill.

The Bill which seeks grant of Indian Citizens to non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, was tabled amid stiff protest by the opposition parties like Congress, DMK, TMC, RJD, NCP.

The opposition is arguing that the provisions of the Bill is against the Constitution of India and its secular ethos.  Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that the Bill is regressive and is against the article 14 of the constitution.

On the other hand, the Shia Waqf  Board has requested the government to include Shias in the Bill, as they are also facing religious prosecution in countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Apart from the CAB, the home Minister is scheduled to move the Arms (Amendment) Bill, 2019 for consideration and passage. The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Sixth Amendment) Bill, 2019, and Anti-Maritime Piracy Bill, 2019 will be introduced in Lok Sabha tomorrow, 10th December.
