Bhubaneswar: Senior BJD leader V K Pandian on Wednesday criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI) for its actions against IPS officers D S Kutey and Ashish Singh, describing them as unfortunate.

“They are exemplary officers in Odisha who have significantly contributed to controlling the Maoist insurgency, which is now at its lowest point in the state, unlike neighboring Chhattisgarh, which continues to struggle. They have been recognized by the highest authorities in the country for their commitment, dedication, and sacrifice. Kutey, in particular, risked his life combating Maoists in Gajapati district and as IG (operations). This situation is very unfortunate and appears to be a strategy by the BJP, which cannot accept its imminent defeat to the BJD and is threatened by Naveen Babu’s popularity in Odisha,” Pandian stated at a press conference.

Pandian also expressed his belief that Kutey’s suspension is politically motivated. “The Chief Minister and the BJD have never exploited officers for electoral gain. The party is robust in Odisha with one crore members. The BJP might resort to such tactics, but the BJD does not need to,” he asserted.

In response, BJP leader Bhartruhari Mahtab criticized Pandian for questioning the EC’s impartiality. “Officers who have misused power and harassed the people of Odisha will face consequences. There will be no ‘witch-hunting’; instead, appropriate legal and disciplinary actions will be taken based on evidence,” Mahtab said.
